gSmart - New Erasmus Mundus Project in CA

The new Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Project  "gSmart - Spatial ICT Infrastructures for Smart Places", coordinated by the  Department of Geoinformatics - Z_GIS, University of Salzburg, will start in Central Asia. Such a large scale international project is the result of long-term and successful academic and research cooperation between Central Asian and European universities and research institutions established and led by Z_GIS in the field of Geoinformation Science. The gSmart initiative will focus on facilitating academic mobility between European partners and universities in all five Central Asian countries.

UNIGIS distance learning MSc - registration open for fall 2013!

Interested students and professionals from Central Asia will again have the opportunity to enhance their qualifications and to improve their career prospects: the UNIGIS MSc in 'Geographic Information Science & Systems' as well as the 'UNIGIS professional' certificate are offered via online distance learning to active professionals and graduates aiming at making GIS and Geoinformatics the basis for their current and future jobs.

The globally recognized UNIGIS qualifications are offered in Central Asia in a cooperation between the University of Salzburg's Z_GIS competence centre and the Austria-Central Asia Centre for GIScience - ACA*GIScience. Degrees and certificates are awarded from the University of Salzburg, Austria. The UNIGIS study programmes for Central Asia are based on English language online materials with support from instructors in local languages.

Registration now is open for the fall 2013 intake of students, starting in October. Enquiries can be directed to unigis@aca-giscience.org and a brochure for Central Asian students is available online. KSUCTA GEM students have passed the State Exam

Today the second year GEM students of KSUCTA have passed the State Examination on professional modules of MSc Program. Dr. Ermek Sharsheev, the Chairman of the State Attestation Commission, has acknowledged and emphasized the high level of acquired knowledge of our Tempus 'GEM' Geoinformatics students and advanced professional GIS skills.


Six students now have completed the theoretical part of their studies and are working towards finalizing their Master theses.  The Chairman has highlighted the growing importance of Geoinformation science and technologies as well as interest from the academic-research and industrial institutions of Kyrgyzstan.

This publication now has evolved into an annual review and 'yearbook' of GIS research and applications across Central Asia. The GISCA conference series is providing a platform for researchers and educators from different countries to get together, exchange experiences, and develop plans for future initiatives.

uniGIs Quiz at GISCA

UNIGIS Central Asia has organized a quiz of Geoinformatics knowledge and competences during the current GISCA conference. All participants were invited to test their knowledge across the areas of spatial data models, spatial analysis, remote sensing and cartography.
Everyone who is not a teacher in a Geoinformatics program took part in a competition for token prices donated by conference sponsor Trimble, hosts KazNU and UNIGIS International. Corresponding to GISCA'13, 13 questions had to be answered, resulting in a tight field of top performers reaching the critical threshold of 30 points:

GEM 2013 Summer School in Almaty, April 28 - May 4, 2013

The TEMPUS GEM Summer School and Teacher training workshops have started at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Science, Al-Farabi KazNU in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

GEM and UNIGIS MSc students and young teachers from Central Asian universities are attending classes on GIS, Remote Sensing and Project Management given by Prof.Dr. Strobl, Prof.Dr. Bela Markus and other international trainers. These activities are organized as pre- and post-conference events to the  Annual Central Asia GIS Conference - GISCA'13, May 2-3, 2013, KazNU, Almaty.

Workshop ‘Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment for Central Asia and the Caucasus'

The workshop  ‘Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment for Central Asia and the Caucasus’ was held from March 7-10, 2013 in Tbilisi (Georgia). This workshop is organized by the Volkwagen Foundation and Giessen University, Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU).

The workshop was aiming to identify current research directions and to explore possibilities for cooperation between researchers in Germany, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Discussion topics of the workshop sessions will address interdisciplinary research strategies as well as methodological research questions on a regional scale.

The work process -Interactive World Café group #1

There are about 70 participants from Central Asia and Caucasus and Europe. During these days we had an excellent opportunity to work in small groups in Interactive World Café. It was really very interesting experience. All of us could make contributions within this time. This also helped us to meet and get aquainted with new contacts.

All participants had a good opportunity to learn about the country by visiting Aragvi valley, Mleta and  Gudauri. We were all very impressed by the city tour introducing special architecture and old historical buildings.
